191: Bourbon’s Paint House

The existing house consists largely of two parts: a heavy brick mass with a light, framed gable roof. Both conceptually extruded towards the rear yard. The extended first floor mass is treated as a plinth to be carved and manipulated, and on top of which the lightness of the extruded gable can visibly rest. The dramatic slope of the gable roof is used as a reference surface against which spatial popups for the second floor can be read. The resulting interior spaces are sculptural and provide a sense of place within the house.

The intention for the program is to create simultaneous relationships between intimacy and expansiveness, darkness and light.
