59 West End Girl
This renovation to an apartment on the Upper West Side in New York City allowed for the construction of furniture pieces as part of the intervention.
A bistro table, two armoires, an entry bench and shelving, and a credenza all provided for opportunities to investigate detailing and form.
The bistro table utilizes two intersecting steel plates that form both the legs and base, as well as support for the top. The means by which they interlock eliminates the need for any fasteners.
The black-stained Ash armoire is relatively conventional in its initial form, but with two white-lacquer components that interrupt its otherwise quiet mass.
The white lacquer and White Ash armoire uses a side panel shaped to call to mind typical Scandinavian furniture. The opposite end is then wrapped with a bent plane of Ash, hugging its open shelves.
The entry bench, a long, simple Walnut-and-felt piece, is positioned against the wall with two asymmetrically crafted shelving pieces.
The credenza, a unit twelve feet in length, is built from three four foot sections. Each section is locked to the next using brass “keys”, which are dropped into Walnut blocks set in the ends of the high gloss polyester lacquered boxes.
