68: Gramercy Loft Apartment
Once a brewery, this building underwent had undergone an unfortunate conversion. Beneath the application of layers of gaudy finishes remained the skeleton of the building, which we used as a point of departure for this Work.
Employing a simple palette of steel, white oak, plaster and stone, the insertion into this loft is intended to move lightly in and around the existing context. A long, narrow hall greets entrants to the loft. On turning the corner, the ceiling slips away in layers eventually revealing the stripped wood beams above. The Kitchen, tucked into the side of the primary space, sits between and beneath abstract white planes. The bathroom is a volume that then delaminates from the white surrounding mass, allowing a borrowed light to trace its outer edge above. The balance of the bedrooms surround the core.
This Work has since undergone an extension to Work 186, creating an entirely distinct area for family and for play.
